How do you speak? Do you use a natural tone and speak at your normal speaking rate? Are you aware of your volume, rhythm, voice pitch? Are you prepared enough to be relaxed, warm and have a voice and facial expression that matches your feelings? Do you appropriately express excitement and enthusiasm for what you are saying? Do you smile when appropriate and maintain good eye contact? Are you open, vulnerable, and authentic? Is your posture communicating your message?

Learning a new skill takes courage and encouragement. When it comes to speaking, the same philosophy applies. In manufacturing it's important to "get it right the first time." In speaking, however, perfection is not only unattainable, it shouldn't even be your goal.

The next time you get up to speak and feel those butterflies in the stomach, get them to fly in formation. It is normal to have some nervousness, some sweaty palms and occasionally a dry mouth. It's not about perfection. Just have fun. Your audience wants you to succeed. You believe that, don't you?
